I'm excited to announce the release of my new book, The Born Again Runner. This book is more personal for me than my first (Build Your Running Body). While Build Your Running Body was a science-driven manual for the sport of running, it didn't touch on the visceral and often tentative first steps we all must take to join that sport. My own running rebirth began with a trip to the ER when I was 38 years old. Massive substance abuse, overwork, and lack of sleep had led to a literal physical collapse. The doctor who treated me told me, "At the rate you're going, you won't live to see your son [then 6] graduate from high school." So I did the only thing I could think of to get back on track: I pulled my old pair of Nike Pegasus from the closet and went for a run (a very very short one that first time). But this book isn't about my story. It's the story of every runner who faces obstacles on the way to starting or re-starting a running program. The book lays out a path that any potential runner can follow to find success in the sport, and along the way we deal with all the myths, excuses, and training mistakes that can get in the way of our programs. There's also a chapter to help create an action plan to ensure success in your program. A chapter on diet. And 70 pages of injury-prevention exercises, listed by injury with photo-instruction. If you're interested, click on the book below to go to the Amazon page for the book--or go to your local bookstore and find it on the shelves.

While this blog might have been discontinued, I certainly didn't discontinue my writing, as many of this blog's visitors know. I wrote for Running Times magazine for 6 years, and I had my first running book, Build Your Running Body, published this in July, 2014. Here's a basic rundown on the book:

"BUILD YOUR RUNNING BODY is the first whole-body, photo-illustrated fitness manual for runners. Whether you’re a beginner looking to train for the first time or an experienced runner hoping to improve your personal best at 5K or the marathon, Build Your Running Body offers a breakthrough exercise plan that will carry you to your fitness goal. You’ll learn to build your fitness from the ground up, targeting the individual components--muscles, connective tissue, cardiovascular system, nervous system, hormones, and more--that power each step you take.

Improved running performance and whole-body fitness aren't unsolved mysteries. Coaches, athletes, and exercise physiologists have been working on both for decades, and the giant leaps forward in fitness and performance speak for themselves. The trick lies in utilizing advances in training to achieve your own fitness goals. The truth is that your body is an incredibly complex biological machine with hundreds of working parts, and good training demands that you target all of them. Build Your Running Body is dedicated to a simple principle: If you want to become a better runner, you must begin by building a better running body."
